emotionalmarkup is the personal website and blog of Ramon, who prances about town calling himself a web developer/designer/publisher and other important-sounding titles. This site's thesis is that what lies underneath design - markup, CSS and JavaScript - is as important, and can affect the senses in a similar fashion, as a website's exterior.

It may appear that I'm exagerating, however if you've ever been frustrated by that panging cross-browser development migraine, or struck by elation at reducing your markup clutter, then you'll understand.

I started out as a lawyer but I've been working in the web development and publishing sphere since 2000. My main gig these days is standards-based frontend development with a focus on XHTML/CSS, AJAX, JavaScript applications and DOM scripting. However I've a lengthy and notorious past designing websites and print materials, writing and editing in various genres and I quite enjoy getting my hands and mind dirty in the backend, fooling around with PHP, MySQL and related technologies.

I've spent most of my professional career in Sydney, Australia working for some of Australia's and the world's largest news media companies. After some brief stints abroad, working in Spain and travelling in general, I packed up and moved to London, of course, where I now reside and work for the BBC.

This is where I also must take the time to say that all written materials on this website represent the opinions of me and the site's individual contributing commentators, and not necessarily those of my employer, my accountant and the rambling lunatic on the corner of Brixton Road who smells and looks like a battered tin cup of beef tea.

Everything else I've forgotton.
